Over the past few months it has been a roller coaster of ups and downs and through it all I have seen God working in amazing ways.

Tonight I have been looking at where people are at around me, as well as myself. At the moment, everyone seems to be ‘putting themselves first’. Admittedly I too have been guilty of this, unaware of the post traumatic symptoms in myself and others.

But the point I would like to share is this, “It’s a funny thing how in troubled times many feel the need to put themselves first. I wonder what Jesus said about this?”

Opening my Bible I came to read Matthew 22: 36-41

Then one could say, “If the second commandment is to love your neighbour as yourself, how do you uphold that in troubled times?”

Well here is what I think the answer is, we put ourselves first because we are too empty to give out. Jesus was God as man on earth and felt the things we do, but with time alone with his Father often, he was able to give, even giving his life in the end.

When we talk about “meditation” it isn’t sitting there with an empty head, its purposely taking time out and spending it in relationship with Jesus. It makes perfect sense that the most important commandment was to love the Lord with all your heart and all your soul and with all your mind, because without doing that, you can’t possibly uphold the second commandment.

So I just want to encourage you, to push past the distractions of life, push past the excuses of spending time alone with God; I’m too busy, I didn’t sleep well last night, I don’t feel well, I don’t feel like it… and get to know your heavenly Father intimately and I know you will see real changes in how you are able to give even when you are going life’s “stuff”.

The music aims to create an uplifting environment of relaxation and contemplation. Using soft, warm sounds and repetitive phrases, some of which were inspired by those “playing in the Spirit” moments in charasmatic worship, the mind is soothed and the body relaxed. The verses appear often enough to remind you of the focus but leave plenty of space for your own prayer and worship.

The CD contains five meditations ranging from 10 to 15 minutes in length. Each meditation is on just one or two verses that are threaded throughout the music.

Just remember, meditation is not just for sitting and being still, it’s also great for doing, so give this a play while you’re doing your housework, ironing or exercising.

The meditation we practice as Christians does not allow for emptying of the mind, aside from being virtually impossible for the average person to do it just doesn’t make sense why you would need or want to. We are not made to be empty, we are created to be full of all good things, look at Psalm 23 and all the good things God does and is for us - why wouldn’t our cups be full!

Enjoy your meditation experience and practice it whenever you have the chance. In the stillness and quiet created within you, you can draw close to God and hear all He wants to say to you.

Lately I’ve been experiencing a hectic schedule coupled with a rekindled desire to keep fit, so I’ve been experimenting with exercising and meditation. What a combination!!

I encourage you to give it a try, if you’re already walking, running or exercising, use your meditation CDs as you work out. Not only are you keeping fit but you’re spending time with your heavenly Father, listening to encouraging words and music.

Liz Babbs (B. Ed, M.Ed.) is an award-winning author, performer, broadcaster, speaker, spiritual director and creative prayer consultant.

She is author of nine books and four CDs including the award-winning Into God’s Presence (Zondervan 2005) and many of her books have been translated into other languages. Liz writes on issues of health, self help and spirituality and travels internationally as an author, performer and speaker.
